The Kuttanad area of Kerala was declared by FAO as a GIAHS (Globally important Agricultural Heritage System) on the basis of a proposal prepared by MSSRF. Kuttanad is also a Ramsar site and a reputed destination for water tourism. Over the years, the Kuttanad ecosystem has deteriorated considerably due to human interventions, flooding and other ecological disasters.

Kuttanad is one of the few places in the world where farming is carried around 4 to 10 feet (1.2 to 3.0 m) below sea level. It is a unique and globally important agricultural heritage system & the farmers here are famous for Biosaline farming.
Kuttanad has been declared as one of the Ramsar (international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands) sites. The Vembanadu – Kol wetlands is one of largest Ramsar sites on the southwestern coast of India as per the guidelines of
